Hotel Review: JW Marriott Absheron Baku, Perfect Location and View for the F1

During a recent stay in Baku I opted for the JW Marriott Absheron Baku which had everything I was looking for; Luxury, location, lounge and cheap on points. You definitely can’t go wrong with any of this.

We arrived very early in the morning, and I had arranged for a car from the hotel to pick us up just to make it easier.

JW Marriott Baku Review

Upon walking into the hotel, you can see the grand entrance. The staff checked us quickly, and they were very polite recognising my Gold Marriott status. They informed us that we had been upgraded to the Deluxe room with a view of the Caspian Sea.

The room size is excellent and the floor to ceiling windows do give a magnificent view of the sea and the rest of the city of Baku.

The room had everything you would expect, and the bathroom was spacious as well. I am not sure why it is so popular to have sliding doors or glass on every side of the bathroom walls, but it seems to be a very modern architecture. Personally, I am not a great fan of it.

We quickly settled to sleep and start exploring the city the following day.

Lounge

As Gold Marriott members we had access to the executive lounge, and the breakfast served there. I was not sure what to expect, but I have to say that breakfast in the lounge is excellent. It had everything that you would expect from a buffet breakfast including egg orders.

Breakfast was served 6 am to 11 am.

In the afternoon they also had a very good spread of canapes, salads, desserts and of course alcoholic drinks.

The evening snacks were available 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm but I noticed the drinks were left open until much later.

The lounge was never busy, and I loved that it was very spacious as well. There were tables for eating, sofas for relaxing and their business centre was excellent including the small meeting room which I liked. Shame I didn’t get to use it.

We stayed for 5 days, and we pretty knew the lounge the staff and the other guests using the lounge, this is probably the longest I have stayed in a hotel during a city break.

We didn’t try the breakfast in the main restaurant because we didn’t feel we were missing anything.

Location

The hotel is close to the Port of Baku and next to the start and finishing line of the Formula 1. If I was to ever come back during F1, I am surely booking a room with a view and just watching it from above.

JW Marriott Baku Review

From JW Marriott Absheron Baku you can walk through the corniche all the way to the old Baku city. It is an enjoyable walk, and it doesn’t take more than 40min. I liked the location of the hotel as it was close enough to walk but far enough not to have all the busy traffic and noise. Plus the view of the Flame Towers and Caspian sea and pretty much the rest of Baku city are well worth it.

If you want to take a taxi, we used Uber most of the time, and we never paid more then 2AZN (£0.90) per ride. Ubers in Baku are very cheap. If you haven’t signed up to Uber you can receive a ride free by using my link.

When we came, the pick the hotel arranged cost us 65AZN (£27), which for me was OK since we arrived at 1:30 am, and I didn’t want to have to deal with taxi or Uber. On our return we just used Uber, and the cost us 14AZN (£6).

Outside the hotel, there were many taxis as well, but we never used them. I much prefer using Uber when abroad, it gives me a sense of safety. If I go back and arrive during the day, I will happily look for a taxi or Uber since the price difference is enormous!

Overall we enjoyed our stay in the JW Marriott Absheron Baku, and I will happily come back. The staff were polite and welcoming; the location is perfect, the property is luxurious, and the facilities are top notch.

The property costs about £120 per night standard rate, I used 40,000 points and received the 5th night free. While there Marriott announced changes to their properties and this property goes from 10,000 per night to 15,000 per night, still it is a good value, and I can imagine it will be even better during the F1 season.
